What is the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative?
The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is a global non-profit organisation. Its aim is to improve sustainability along the aluminium supply chain. By establishing an internationally recognised certification system, ASI ensures that aluminium is produced, procured and managed sustainably. This brings environmental, social and economic benefits.
The ASI was founded to strengthen responsibility and openness in the aluminium industry. It works with partners from various sectors, including mines, producers and end users, as well as civil society groups. Together they are developing an independent standard based on the ISEAL Codes of Conduct. This work helps the industry to become more sustainable and supports global sustainable development.
Why is ASI certification relevant?
Certification according to the standards of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative offers companies numerous advantages. It not only improves the transparency of the supply chain by providing insight into the origin of the aluminium and the production conditions, but also makes it possible to identify optimisation potential and promote a more sustainable production process.
For companies, ASI certification means recognising their commitment to environmental, ethical and social responsibility, which can lead to a significant improvement in their image. This commitment to sustainability not only fulfils the expectations of sustainability-conscious customers, but also offers decisive competitive advantages, as it enables companies to stand out from their competitors and strengthen their market position.

ASI standards and certifications
The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) has developed two main standards: the Performance Standard and the Chain of Custody Standard. The Performance Standard focuses on environmental, social and governance aspects of aluminium production and processing.
The Chain of Custody Standard ensures the traceability of certified aluminium through the supply chain. Both standards aim to promote sustainable practices and ensure the integrity of certified aluminium.
ASI certification process
The certification process begins with a self-assessment by the company, followed by a detailed review by an independent ASI-accredited auditor. This assesses compliance with the ASI standards, identifies any gaps and recommends improvement measures. Following a successful audit and closure of all gaps, the company receives ASI certification.
Costs of ASI certification
The costs for ASI certification vary depending on the size and complexity of the organisation and the scope of the processes to be certified. As a rule, they include the fees for membership of the ASI, the costs for external auditing and possible internal costs for the preparation and implementation of the certification process.
Outlook: Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI)
The future of the ASI looks promising as more and more companies recognise the importance of sustainability. Companies are striving to improve their practices. Many customers are interested in the origin and processing of “sustainable” aluminium.
Whether for their own brand image, or because of customer demand, the ASI is paving its way as an industry standard. The initiative plans to continually update and expand its standards to meet the changing needs of the industry and the expectations of stakeholders.
The growing number of ASI-certified companies underlines the industry’s commitment to sustainability.
