General information on sustainability reporting

Sustainability reporting is becoming increasingly important as companies are being held more and more accountable for transparently presenting their impact on the environment and society. With the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the EU has created a binding framework that obliges companies to report their ESG data in detail.

The aim of the CSRD is to encourage companies to adopt more sustainable and responsible business practices and to support the EU Green Deal. It replaces the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) and expands the requirements for sustainability reporting. Companies must collect and disclose information on topics such as CO2 emissions, energy consumption, social standards and governance practices.

The importance of sustainability reporting for companies

Sustainability reporting is a crucial means for companies to transparently present their environmental, social and governance (ESG) activities. Companies must document their sustainability strategies transparently and systematically collect and process ESG data. This not only influences decision-making with regard to environmental and social standards, but also offers companies the opportunity to position themselves as sustainable and responsible. Transparent reporting strengthens the trust of investors, customers and other stakeholders and helps to minimize risks.

The CSRD will make around 15,000 companies in Germany and around 50,000 companies in Europe subject to reporting requirements in the coming years.

Reporting in accordance with the CSRD began in 2025 for companies that were previously subject to the NFRD or CSR-RUG. These are large listed companies of public interest with an annual average of more than 500 employees and either a net turnover of at least 40 million euros or a balance sheet total of at least 20 million euros. Affected companies must report on their 2024 financial year.

From 2026, large companies with limited liability that meet two of the following three requirements must also report for the preceding financial year 2025: more than 250 employees, a net turnover of at least 50 million euros or a balance sheet total of more than 25 million euros.

From 2027, the obligation will also apply to listed SMEs as well as small and non-complex credit institutions and tied/proprietary insurance companies. In their case too, two of three criteria must be met: more than 10 employees on average, at least sales revenue of 900 thousand euros or a balance sheet total of more than 450 thousand euros. A postponement of the reporting obligation for the 2026 and 2027 financial years is possible for these SMEs, provided it is justified in the management report. In addition, simplified standards, known as LSME (Listed Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) standards, apply to these companies.

From 2029, all non-EU companies with a net turnover of more than 150 million euros in the EU and with at least one subsidiary or branch in the EU must report. In addition, special standards for companies in third countries will apply to these companies.

Reporting in accordance with the GRI or DNK standard is voluntary.

User-friendly interfaces: The reporting module offers an intuitive user interface that simplifies the creation and maintenance of sustainability reports.

Simplification of the materiality analysis: The module guides companies through the various and sometimes complex ESRS topics using simple yes-no questions. The assessment of impacts, opportunities and risks is based on structured criteria with easy-to-understand selection options.

Prepared text modules: Ready-made text modules are generated based on the answers, which only need to be checked and adapted if necessary.

Time saving: Automation significantly reduces the effort required for research and text creation and saves valuable time.
Automated materiality analysis: Material topics are automatically calculated based on the module’s assessment. Furthermore, an automated report with the material topics and a description of the methodology can be created at the touch of a button.

Frequently asked questions

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is an EU directive that requires companies to report comprehensively on their sustainability practices and strategies. It is crucial as it increases transparency and encourages companies to act more sustainably. Companies that comply with CSRD requirements promote environmental awareness, social responsibility and improved governance, which in turn strengthens their image and competitiveness.

The reporting module in TransPPParent currently supports the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). In the long term, there are also plans to support other sustainability reporting standards such as the German Sustainability Code (DNK) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). These standards provide a uniform framework that enables companies to report their sustainability goals effectively and consistently.

PeoplePlanetProfit supports companies in implementing the CSRD module by offering customized solutions and adapting the software to the specific needs of the company. We provide training and technical support and help with the integration of ESG data sources to ensure smooth use of the module.

The creation of a report with the CSRD module can vary depending on the scope and complexity of the data required. However, thanks to the module’s automation and real-time data processing, the process can be carried out quickly and efficiently. Typically, a report can be created within a few days or weeks instead of requiring months of manual work.

The CSRD module solves several problems, including the complexity of data collection and preparation, by automating the process and ensuring consistent and error-free reporting. It also helps to meet legal requirements by ensuring that companies comply with all CSRD requirements. In addition, it provides a central platform for the management and publication of sustainability data and significantly reduces the time and resources required.

All companies covered by the CSRD Directive should use a suitable software solution such as the CSRD module. This applies to companies that operate in the EU and have reached a certain size or market capitalization. Smaller companies that want to improve their sustainability practices and align them with the EU Green Deal will also benefit from such software.

The CSRD module offers numerous functions, including automated data collection and processing, the creation of standard-compliant reports, real-time monitoring and analysis of ESG data, a central data platform for managing sustainability information and user-friendly interfaces for easy operation.

The CSRD module offers numerous advantages: It automates reporting, which saves time and costs, ensures compliance with the CSRD, increases transparency and credibility with stakeholders and enables easy integration into existing company processes. It also optimizes the sustainability strategy and goals through precise data collection and offers a user-friendly interface that simplifies use and delivers fast results.
