Digital product passport – a legally compliant solution for manufacturers and suppliers

What is the Digital Product Passport (DPP)?

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a tool, similar to a passport, which displays all relevant data about a product throughout its entire life cycle.

From the origin of raw materials to the individual manufacturing steps to information on repair and recycling options, the DPP provides this information in a structured, machine-readable format.

Interested parties can access this data at any time via a QR code or NFC tag. From 2027, the digital product passport will become mandatory for numerous product groups – based on EU requirements (in particular ESPR, EU 2023/1542).

Why is the DPP important for companies?

On the one hand, the digital product passport enables companies to comply with all relevant EU regulations (such as ESPR, the Battery Directive, and the Construction Products Regulation), thereby creating legal certainty and unrestricted market access. On the other hand, transparent documentation of material and energy flows strengthens the trust of customers, trading partners, and investors.

Through the systematic recording and optional validation of product data, risks in the supply chain can be identified at an early stage, sustainability goals can be demonstrably achieved, and competitiveness can be secured in the long term through resource-saving processes.

What is a digital product passport?

A digital product passport (DPP) is a tool, similar to a passport, which displays all relevant data about a product throughout its entire life cycle. From the materials used to manufacturing processes and reparability to recycling rates and carbon footprint, the DPP provides all data in a structured format.

End consumers and business partners can access this information immediately via a QR code or NFC tag, enabling them to make informed decisions. The timely and transparent provision of data helps companies to efficiently achieve their sustainability and circular economy goals.

Which products are affected? Overview of EU requirements

With the adoption of the European Sustainable Product Regulation (ESPR) and accompanying regulations such as the Battery and Construction Products Regulations, a DPP will become mandatory for various product categories from 2027. The groups likely to be affected include:

  • Textiles and clothing – DPP mandatory from 2027/2028 (in accordance with the EU Textile Strategy)
  • Packaging materials – DPP mandatory from 2028 (under the PPWR – Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation)
  • Batteries and accumulators – DPP mandatory from 2027 (according to EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542)
  • Chemicals (including detergents and cleaning agents) – DPP mandatory from 2029 (expected as part of future REACH/chemicals strategy adjustments)
  • Construction products – DPP requirement from 2028 (according to the draft of the new EU Construction Products Regulation)
  • Electronic devices – DPP requirement from 2027/2028 (within the framework of ESPR and ecodesign requirements)

Requirements according to ESPR, Battery Regulation, and Construction Products Regulation

The ESPR defines basic principles for sustainable product design, resource efficiency, and consumer information, while the Battery Regulation (EU 2023/1542) stipulates minimum requirements for chemical composition, performance, and recyclability of batteries.

The Construction Products Regulation (EU 305/2011) requires documented performance evidence on durability, building material safety, and recyclability. Together, these regulations form the binding framework within which all product data must be represented in the DPP and ensure uniform standards throughout the EU.

Minimum content requirements for the DPP

Each DPP must contain the following:

  1. Product identification including type, model, and serial number
  2. Material information including raw material origin, quantity, and material proportions
  3. Manufacturing details such as place of manufacture
  4. Usage and repair instructions (e.g., maintenance cycles and spare part availability)
  5. End-of-life information (recycling options, disposal recommendations),
  6. Environmental indicators such as carbon footprint or energy consumption.

Technical implementation: data structure, hosting, and QR code

Data is entered into a clear input mask with defined validation rules that ensure completeness and consistency. Hosting options range from our highly available cloud infrastructure to your company’s own on-premises solution—always including regular backups and strict data protection.

QR codes are automatically generated, versioned, and provided with a direct link to the current DPP instance so that customers always have access to the latest information. The QR codes are dynamic. This means that even if product information changes, the QR code does not need to be regenerated. This simplifies the process, especially for products that are already on the market.

Integration of testing organizations

To strengthen data integrity, accredited testing bodies (notified bodies) can be connected via standardized APIs. Audit reports, certificates, and seals of approval from external organizations are integrated directly into the DPP, allowing users to verify the validity of all information in a matter of seconds. This ecosystem of data collection, validation, and disclosure ensures maximum transparency and trust.

White label and API options for platform integration

Our white label front ends can be easily integrated into your digital presence, completely in line with your corporate design and under your own domain. REST and GraphQL APIs enable automated connection to ERP, PIM, or SCM systems, supported by webhooks for real-time notifications and SDKs for common development environments. This allows the DPP to become a seamless part of your existing IT landscape.

Frequently asked questions

The EU plans to make the digital product passport mandatory for certain product areas starting in 2027. The exact implementation will take place gradually and will be based on various legal requirements, in particular the EU Ecodesign Regulation for Sustainable Products (ESPR). In addition, specific deadlines apply within sector-specific regulations, such as the EU Battery Regulation and the planned Construction Products Regulation.

The first product categories affected include batteries, textiles, electronic devices, packaging, and construction products. Cleaning agents, detergents, and chemicals also fall within the scope of application. In the future, expansion to other industries is expected, particularly in resource-intensive sectors.

The digital product passport contains structured information about material composition, carbon footprint, repairability, recyclability, and safe use and disposal. It also includes data on the supply chain, compliance with sustainability goals, and legal documentation requirements. The exact design depends on the respective product group.

The PPP platform enables the simple and legally compliant creation of digital product passports. Companies enter their data either manually or via an interface and generate an EU-compliant DPP at the touch of a button. A QR code or NFC tag links the product to the stored information. The platform is web-based, intuitive to use, and supports all common product formats.
